From Pit Swipes to the Quad: A Day in My Life at Wake Forest
Contrary to how some might expect me to feel, Monday is my favorite day on campus. Coming off the weekend, I’m always super-excited for what the upcoming week will bring. As you’ll soon see, Monday is the day when I run around campus the most, but it’s also the day I get to see all of my friends in my various niches at Wake, so let’s get started!
I usually wake up around 8 a.m. to go on a nice run before class. While, yes, it is an early morning, it helps me feel productive for the long day ahead. Then, my roommate Alina and I drive to campus together from our off-campus senior year house and make it with 15 minutes to spare for the day’s first class, Theatre 274, World Theatre, with Dr. Rob Eastman-Mullins. Rob, as he’s affectionately known by his students, is one of those professors who creates such an amazing environment where everyone is able to share their opinions and creative designs without judgement.
At 10:50, I skedaddle from class and take a nice walk around campus. I usually grab a quick lunch outside on the Magnolia Quad or get some work done in ZSR Library. But not for too long, as I head back to Scales Fine Arts Center for my second class of the day, Theatre 373, Female Playwrights, with Dr. J.K. Curry. If you haven’t already gathered, I’m a theatre minor, along with a Psychology major and Sociology minor. A wonderful characteristic of Wake Forest is the fact that you can have majors and minors all over the place, while still staying true to who you are!
Now, the real fun begins, as, after my 12:30 class with Dr. Curry, I’m off to Benson University Center, where I have a meeting with the Student Activity Fee board. Here, along with five peers and a handful of staff members, we work to grant clubs and organizations on-campus money for large-scale events they’re throwing, whether they be religious, artistic, or philanthropic. After that meeting, I race back to Scales to make it in time to serve as the Director of Events and Programming for the Anthony Aston Players, our theatre service organization. Every week, I’m greeted by the most wonderful, smiling faces and get to reconnect with all of my theatre-loving peers and faculty, hear about the cool things they’re working on, and celebrate the accomplishments of my friends.
At 4:45, I make my way to a different part of Scales, as I’m a member of the Wake Forest Chamber Choir. Here, I sit alongside 40 singers, as we rehearse music for our concerts and Wake Forest events like Lovefeast (our holiday service of carols and reflection) and Founder’s Day. Coming into rehearsal, being able to check my stress at the door and just lose myself in the music is the best way to close out my day – but not quite yet! I still have one last stop on my Monday, and that’s sorority chapter. I’m finishing up my term as President of Kappa Delta, and we meet every Monday at 6 p.m. Here, I get to see my sorority lineage, fellow council members, and best friends I’ve had since Bid Day.
Now, it’s around 7 p.m., and I am going to The Pit (our dining hall, located in the basement of Reynolda Hall, thus its name – the food is the opposite of the pits!) with my friends, in a weekly endeavor affectionately known as “lin din,” as we laugh and recount this past weekend’s events and the things we’re looking forward to this week.
While I still have plenty of homework to get up to on Monday evenings, having this day be full of so much joy, laughter, and community reminds me that I am never alone, no matter what building, class, or department I’m in at any moment. Wake Forest has provided me with such a caring community of people who are always there to support me, and I could not be more grateful.
