When it comes to education in science, technology, and math disciplines, we at Wake Forest University have always had a bit of a radical in us.

More than a century ago, that meant becoming the first major college in the South to teach Biology in a lab. It meant leading the way in the teaching of evolution.

Today, these things are not so contentious. But the passage of time hasn’t stopped us from innovating.

Wake Forest University recently became the nation’s only Bachelor of Science in Engineering program offered by an undergraduate-only department with a curriculum grounded in a liberal-arts tradition and housed in a research institution.

Also in 2022, Statistics branched off from Mathematics and is now its own department.

New majors and concentrations in STEM fields came into being in time for the 2017 opening of Wake Downtown, a converted tobacco warehouse and a hub of biotechnology located 13 minutes from the main campus.

That’s a long way of saying we try to include all the elements.

Here are some stats to back that up:

  • 29th: Ranking among research universities (more than 400 in all) in portion of Class of 2021 graduates majoring in Math or Statistics.
  • 40%: Representation of women among Wake Forest Engineering graduates in the Class of 2021.
    • That % ranks 18th among the 259 research institutions with ≥ 40 Engineering degree recipients. The national average is 25%.
  • 100%: Increase in the number of STEM majors offered from 2009-10 (8) to 2022-23 (16).
  • Approximately 300: Students who have traveled to Peru for study under the direction of Dr. Miles Silman, an internationally acclaimed scholar in sustainability of the Amazon, since 2010.
  • 10: Distinct areas of computer science in which students can engage.

And we’re not through mixing things up.
